Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Surface Waters – Research and Management (SURF) located in Kastanienbaum (Lucerne) has a vacancy for a

18 months Postdoctoral position Constraining lateral O2 injections into the anoxic south basin of Lake Zug

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to join our department for an 18-month project focused on investigating the physical drivers responsible for lateral injection of oxygen in the two-basin Lake Zug. This exciting opportunity will allow you to contribute to cutting-edge research at the interface of physics and biogeochemical cycling. The project aims to understand the magnitude of lateral oxygen injection compared to other sources, as well as the mechanisms controlling this transport. The outcomes of this research will provide valuable insights into the current state of Lake Zug as well as inform future lake management strategies. The project will be supervised by the Aquatic Physics group in close collaboration with the Aquatic Geochemistry group, and offers opportunities to interact with other research groups in the SURF department, at Eawag, and internationally.

Postdoc Profile: We are seeking a candidate with expertise in both hydrodynamic modelling and fieldwork related to physical processes in lakes. Proficiency in the deployment and operation of physical and chemical sensors, as well as experience in processing sensor data, is essential. An interest in biogeochemical cycling and/or microbial processes is highly desirable, as it will complement the interdisciplinary nature of this project. The successful candidate will have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, be adept at working both independently and collaboratively, and possess a strong publication record.

Application: To apply for this position, please submit the following documents:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) detailing your academic qualifications and research experience
  • A cover letter describing your research interests, relevant skills, and how you meet the postdoc profile
  • Contact information for at least two professional references
  • Proof of a PhD degree

Review of applications will begin 1 September 2023 and the position will remain open until filled. The anticipated starting date for the position is January 2024 or on agreement.
