Job description
The Robotics, Evolution, and Art Lab (REAL) is based at the IT University of Copenhagen. Our vision is to do research on the border between fiction and fact, to create new, feasible solutions for the society of tomorrow. The lab has an interdisciplinary experimental practice and explores what-if scenarios using fundamental science and engineering to work towards the realization of these scenarios. Academically, the group is rooted in artificial intelligence with specific interests in robotics and evolutionary computation, but generally the research agenda is driven by opportunities arising both within science and in society. The candidate is expected to conduct research and to collaborate with fellow faculty members in the REAL lab and the Computer Science Department in general and to develop interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaborations when relevant. The candidate is expected to contribute to the IT University’s education programs, chiefly technical programs, both by giving courses and by supervising BSc and MSc theses. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to engage with society through external collaboration, to participate in securing external funding, and to contribute to the IT University’s strategic goals.
The assistant professorship is a temporary full-time position starting around October 2023 and ending in September 2026. The position requires academic qualifications at the Ph.D. level.
The candidate We look to hire strong candidates that can contribute to our work at the intersection of robotics, artificial intelligence, and mechatronics holding a PhD in these areas or a closely related field. The candidate is expected to conduct research and research-based teaching in one or more of the department’s existing areas, including:
- Mechatronics of modular robotics;
- Distributed control of embedded, modular systems;
- Embodied artificial intelligence applied to physical robotic systems;
- Distributed robot learning (e.g. based on cellular automata); and
- Evolutionary robotics
The ideal candidate should document:
- Publications of research at a high international level in well-respected peer reviewed venues such as Alife, Gecco, and IEEE conferences.
- Competences in developing and conducting teaching that is well received by students
- A record of contributing to the goals of the institutions in which he/she has worked, for example participation in committees, etc.
The application should also state any additional qualities that the candidate may possess, such as excellent communication skills, leadership skills in diverse environments, and the like.

The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time academics. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.
Salary
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Taxation´s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
