The Department of Conservation offer master’s and bachelor’s degrees in the integrated conservation of built environments and the conservation of cultural heritage objects, in addition to bachelor’s programs in building crafts, and garden and landscape crafts. Our research is focused on the built environments, cultural heritage objects, and the craftsmanship for sustainable conservation. We use critical perspectives and participatory approaches to develop skills and models of maintenance, restoration, reuse, adaptation, and reconstruction of tangible and intangible cultural heritage resources. We collaborate with universities and other organisations at the local, national, and international levels, and this has been supported by the strategic location of the Department in Gothenburg and Mariestad. Senior lecturer in Conservation, with specialisation in Garden and Landscape Craft
Subject area description
“Kulturvård” is the art to preserve, develop and in a sustainable way use material and immaterial “objects” from the past. As a discipline “kulturvård” on the one hand studies conditions for the survival of these object from cultural, societal, scientific and crafts perspectives, on the other hand, studies the social and cultural processes which lead to a situation where specific “objects” are considered as heritage. The term “object” is here used generically and comprises all kinds of material and immaterial phenomena.
The duties consist of teaching, research, and interaction with the surrounding society within the subject of garden and landscape craft, with a cultural historical perspective on horticulture, garden environments, and plant material.
The teaching tasks consist of, together with the collegium, planning, developing, and performing teaching on basic and advanced level, with a particular focus on the bachelor program Garden and Landscape Craft in Mariestad. Teaching at the other bachelor and master programs at the Department of Conservation may also occur. Teaching is both in Swedish and English.
As researcher you are expected to participate actively in the department’s research environments and seminar activities, and both individually and in cooperation with others, initiate and carry out research projects. Externally financed research constitutes an important prerequisite for the research activities of the individual teacher at the department. Therefore, it is part of the work tasks to participate actively in the department’s work to apply for research funding.
At the Department of Conservation interaction with the surrounding society is partly run through the Craft Laboratory. The tasks there consist of research, development tasks, and supervision of project workers, as well as participation in the development of the national and international collaboration of the Craft Laboratory.
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
To be eligible for appointment as a Senior Lecturer, the applicant is required to have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve.
As teaching is in Swedish and English, good knowledge of both languages is required. International applicants who do not speak Swedish at the time of application are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years. If necessary, the employer will assist with Swedish competencedevelopment.
When assessing the applications, equal weight will be given to scientific and teaching excellence.
Professional experience in gardening and landscaping is an advantage, as well as collaboration between the university and the surrounding community nationally and internationally.
In assessing scientific competence, special emphasis will be given to a doctoral degree and scientific publications relevant to the subject of conservation with specialisation in Garden and Landscape Craft. In addition, proven ability to initiate, plan and conduct research, experience of international work and the ability to obtain funding for research in competition will be given weight.
Teaching skills must be well documented, which means that both scope and quality can be assessed.
In this recruitment, we will primarily consider those who, after an overall assessment of scientific and teaching skills, conservation practise and collaboration, are deemed to have the best qualifications to carry out the tasks in the employment and contribute to the positive development of the education and research at the Department.
The position is a permanent full-time employment with placement at the Department of Conservation in Mariestad. First day of employment is by agreement.
