PhD position in ASIC Design for NMR Spectroscopy at department of Electrical Engineering (ISY), Linkoping University, Sweden 2023

Qualification Details

You have graduated at Master’s level in Electronics Engineering or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Electronics Engineering. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. You are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrate documented strong background knowledge and skills in design of analog and radio frequency integrated circuits in advanced CMOS technologies, as well as good background knowledge in analog/digital signal processing systems.
  • Have good knowledge and practical skills in circuit design, simulations, and layout using professional computer aided design tools, as well as good knowledge in measurement of integrated circuits.
  • Have good knowledge and skills in 3D electromagnetic simulations.
  • Strong communication skills and good knowledge in English is a requirement. Good knowledge in Swedish is not a formal requirement, but it will be considered as an merit.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most powerful and versatile analytical methods to probe the molecular information of materials which makes it a robust and widespread analytical instrument for modern organic chemistry, biology, medicine, and industry. However, the strong requirement of homogeneous magnetic fields to perform highly resolved spectroscopy experiments led to bulky and expensive NMR spectroscopy systems based on superconducting magnet technology. To tackle this issue, shrinking the NMR equipment to a portable scale by miniaturizing the magnet and excitation coil and moving from the modular and complex electronics into a CMOS ASIC can be a solution to provide a portable and affordable equipment for rapid and low-cost experiments. The objective of this project is to overcome the challenges associated with the miniaturized NMR spectroscopy to have a sensitive and portable sensor platform for in-situ probing. The hired Ph.D. student is expected to create state-of-the-art technical platform for design of low power analog/RF front-end with special focus on NMR spectroscopy. The project is expected to generate highly innovative circuits and systems solutions to be designed in advanced CMOS and possibly other semiconductor technologies, measured, verified, demonstrated, and published in top international journals and conferences in the field. As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
