PhD student in experimental cardiovascular research

Description of the workplace

The PhD position is placed at the Cardiovascular Research – cellular metabolism and inflammation with labs at the Clinical Research Centre (CRC), a dynamic and inspiring research environment on the Skåne University Hospital Malmö Campus. Work duties

The PhD position will involve studies of murine and human tissues to explore how immune cells impact atherosclerosis development. Translational projects will investigate how immunotherapy used to treat cancer affects the risk of cardiovascular disease. The projects will utilize several methodologies, including flow cytometry, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, image analysis, gene expression analysis, ELISA, tissue sampling, statistics, data analysis and more. The doctoral student will also work with international partners and is expected to participate in international meetings and conferences. The doctoral student may also participate in a limited amount of undergraduate teaching.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a degree at advanced level (master’s or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as medicine, biomedicine or molecular biology.

A requirement for employment is a high level of proficiency in written and spoken English. Previous theoretical or practical knowledge in immunology, cardiovascular disease, cancer immunology, or related subjects is meritorious for employment.

In order to assess the ability of the applicant to benefit from and to assimilate the doctoral education, academic and practical skills and the ability of the applicant to cooperate, work independently, express themselves in speech and writing, performing calculations, organize and plan, as well as personal qualities such as curiosity, commitment, motivation, focus, drive, scientific principles and values will be taken into account.

Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
