We are currently looking for a senior lecturer in social work specialising in academic writing to strengthen our research and education environment.
Subject area
Social work
Subject area description
Social work includes studying the living conditions and experiences of people in socially vulnerable situations. Writing and the use of language in different forms and contexts are central to the practice of social work. Social work involves studying the causes and consequences of social problems, as understood at individual, group and societal levels. Social work is the main subject at first-, second- and third-cycle levels.
Duties
Work duties consist of teaching, supervision and research within the field of academic writing with relevance to social work. Teaching is carried out both individually and in groups, and includes teaching at first-, second- and third-cycle levels.
Teaching aims to enable students to develop their communicative skills and their writing, both in education and in their future professional lives. You will help to introduce and engage students in academic literacy, official language and plain language work. You will also help students to acquire meta-knowledge of language, texts and writing in order to contribute towards an understanding of the purposes of different forms of texts in specific contexts.
Initially, you will work with the directors of studies and course directors to identify the most relevant areas to work with, and to agree on how the teaching can be concretised. It is important that you familiarise yourself with the context of social work in order to understand which language requirements students must consider at different levels.
The position also includes supervising teaching staff as they support students’ academic writing. The position includes your own research (scope: 15%). You will be expected to participate in the department’s research environments and seminars. As externally funded research is an important prerequisite for the department’s and individual members of teaching staff’s research activities, work duties also include active participation in the department’s efforts to identify external funding, with both internal and external researchers.
Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employment as a senior lecturer are listed in Chapter 4, §4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, and in the Employment arrangements for teaching staff at the University of Gothenburg with local application at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have completed a doctoral degree in a relevant subject and have demonstrated teaching skills. Applicants must also have completed university teaching education corresponding to the university teaching education courses PIL101, PIL102 and PIL103 at the University of Gothenburg, or have completed this within two years from the date of employment.
Assessment criteria
When assessing applicants, equal weight will be attached to scientific and teaching skills. Importance is also attached to administrative and other skills of relevance to the position’s subject content and work duties.
When assessing scientific skills, publications of high scientific quality will be considered in the first instance. In addition, importance will be attached to the documented ability to initiate, plan and carry out research and the ability to obtain funding for research in competition.
Teaching skills must be clearly documented, enabling both scope and quality to be assessed. When assessing teaching skills, particular importance will be attached to experience of planning and implementing pedagogical development work and teaching academic writing. Teaching in official language and supervision at first-, second- and third-cycle levels would be an advantage. The applicant must have a good ability to teach in Swedish, and must also be able to teach in English.
There is a particular emphasis on the successful applicant being able to cooperate with others, both internally and externally, and to help to develop the department’s educational, project-related and research activities.
Employment
This is a permanent position (scope: 100%), based at the Department of Social Work. Probationary employment may be applied. The starting date will be as agreed.
Selection process
The recruitment process may involve interviews, taking references and test lectures. The interviews will give applicants the opportunity to describe and develop their views on the subject, and on their potential future role at the department.
If you intend to apply, you should read the Employment arrangements for teaching staff at the University of Gothenburg with local application at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The Department of Social Work shall continue to develop as an attractive and creative workplace that is characterised by equal conditions, and therefore works actively to achieve gender equality and diversity.
