Post-doc in modeling of heat and fluid flow in CO2 heat pumps

Are you interested to contribute to development of innovative heat pump technologies? Do you want to be a part of an international collaboration with leading companies? Then the Department of Mechanical & Production Engineering, Aarhus University (AU-MPE) invites you to apply for a postdoc. position to join an exciting new research project focused on modeling of heat and fluid flow and optimization of heat pumps systems.

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a 2-year position from 1 April 2023 or as soon possible.

Extension beyond 2 years may be considered based on the performance.

Job description

You will be a part of a joint effort together with industrial partners from Denmark, Germany, and Italy. The main goal of the project is to combine numerical simulations with experiments (conducted mainly by the project partners) to upgrade performance of small scale air-source CO2 heat pumps – a newly developed technology with ever increasing market demand. Special focus will be on (1) understanding, prediction, and mitigation of frost formation on heat exchangers, (2) developing a digital model and optimize the heat pump cycle.

You are expected to develop numerical models (including 1D models and full 3D CFD models) and conduct optimization at both component and cycle levels.

Your profile

Applicants should hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant subjects.

The ideal candidate should have the following competences:

  • Proven experience in one, or ideally both, of the following areas: (1) computational fluid dynamics, (2) refrigeration/heat pump systems.
  • A strong publication record in reputable journals (the stage of career will be taken into account).
  • The ability to conduct research independently, but also function effectively in a collaborative research environment.
  • Good English language skills – both technical and general.
  • Experience with optimization methods and development of digital twins (optional)

Who we are

You will join the engineering field at Aarhus University – a top 100 university providing excellent research and research-based education at international level. The engineering field in Aarhus University is changing with a rapid growth in student population, major research initiatives as well as through the establishment of a number of new physical facilities in the city center of Aarhus. You will be a member of the Heat & Fluid Flow Research Group at the department of Mechanical & Production Engineering, Faculty of Technical Sciences.

What we offer

The selected candidate is offered:

  • Access to all research infrastructures required for accomplishment of the project goals,
  • connection to leading European industrial network in the area of heat pumps,
  • a research climate inviting lively, open and critical discussion within and across different fields of research,
  • a working environment with teamwork, close working relations, network activities among young scientists and social activities,
  • a workplace characterized by professionalism, equality and a healthy work-life balance.

Place of work and area of employment

The place of work is Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering, Katrinebjergvej 89G-F, 8200 Aarhus, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.
