Luleå University of Technology is in an expansive phase and is implementing an initiative to strengthen research and education in cyber security by establishing a new research group in the area. The investment is directly related to the university’s successful ICT environment with several strong research groups that offer good opportunities for synergy. We therefore see a focus on research and development of methods to protect various types of systems that are connected to the internet as important. These systems range from small sensors to large-scale control systems for critical infrastructures, and the research covers everything from basic research at method level, e.g. algorithm development, to applied research in collaboration with other groups. The position of the professorship/chair is at the department of computer science, electrical and space engineering, where Luleå University of Technology has gathered research in, among other things, computer science, information systems, signals and systems, and automation. The department’s turnover is approximately SEK 220 million, of which education accounts for half and external funds for research for the other half. The department has well-developed collaborations with research institutes, industry partners, universities and other authorities in both research projects and student projects. The research topic of cyber security is central and important for Luleå University of Technology to be able to actively participate and contribute to the development in strategically important areas around control, monitoring and instrumentation of technical processes and systems. This is particularly important and interesting in view of the green transformation that is taking place in the region with many new companies and industries being established. Cybersecurity links to adjacent research areas at the department such as information systems, pervasive and mobile systems, dependable communication and computing systems, cyber-physical systems, robotics and AI, and machine learning. The department also has a center formation in the area called the Center for Critical Infrastructure and Societal Security (Sw. CiSS) where we work on joint projects with our partners. The environment at the department is open, dynamic and brings together researchers from around twenty different nationalities as well as doctoral students and students from all over the world.
