Qualification Details

Eligible to apply are individuals with a PhD or equivalent scientific skills in a subject of relevance for the position, i.e. biology, biomedicine, medicine etc. The candidate must be fluent in spoken and written English.

The project has a significant experimental component; previous experience of in vivo neuronal recordings and imaging in freely moving animals will therefore be considered a particularly strong merit.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The laboratory of Per Petersson aim to understand how different parts of the central nervous system interact to generate purposeful behaviors. In particular, we study how the cerebral cortex and the basal ganglia interact in order to control motor actions, both under normal conditions and in individuals afflicted by Parkinson’s disease. In our previous work, we have studied motor control functions, ranging from relatively simple circuits in the spinal cord to elaborate networks like the cortico-basal ganglia loop in healthy brains and in models of Parkinson’s disease. To this end, we have developed unique technologies that allow us to analyze neuronal activity from 10-20 brain structures in parallel in freely behaving animals.

A specific aim of the project will be to clarify circuit features in the cortico–basal ganglia system that contribute to symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. The applicant is expected to be able to work both independently and as a part of the research team.

About Integrative Neurophysiology

The neuronal control of different behaviors involve coordinated interaction between interconnected but anatomically distributed networks of neurons in the central nervous system. The study of complex and adaptive aspects of motor behavior, such as learning, selection and sequencing of motor acts, therefore requires studies that link the microcircuit level with the systems level. During the last few years we have refined technologies that enable us to perform measurements of single cell activity in a large number of brain structures in parallel. Employing these techniques we have in particular investigated the function of the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamic circuits in motor control under normal healthy conditions as wells as in parkinsonian animals.
