Job description
Aircraft noise is strongly associated with stress-mediated health effects. It’s also the most significant cause of community aversion against airport operations and expansion. To improve the living environment, noise levels of aviation must come down. And to enable the design of low-noise technology and aircraft, reliable aircraft noise modelling is crucial. As an Assistant Professor in Aircraft Noise at TU Delft you will really make a difference to airport neighbours. You may, for instance, focus on modelling and measuring entire aircraft, or specific parts such as the landing gear and engine components. Alternatively, you may contribute to the modelling of new technologies such as hybrid electric propulsion, drones or urban air mobility.
You will develop your vision and original research line. And to validate your models, you’ll be taking your research from wind tunnels to the airports. Using sophisticated microphone arrays, you will measure take-off, approach and landing procedures. For analysing your data, you will adopt the latest AI-driven methods. To realise your research, you’ll attract funding and build your team of PhD students, whom you’ll supervise to completion. You’ll be working closely with Faculty colleagues and international scientists at universities and research institutes including NLR and DLR, as well as manufacturers, airlines and airports. Within these communities you will disseminate your knowledge and research findings.
Contributing to world-class education, you will support Bachelor students with their practical work and Master students with their theses. At a later stage in your tenure track, you may also give lectures. The internationally diverse team of academic staff and PhD students at the Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects (ANCE) section will be your home base. Requirements
You thrive on initiating and conducting interdisciplinary research and embrace teamwork to achieve meaningful results. The inherent slowness of the actual application of innovations in operational aircraft does not faze you. After all, aircraft tend to have a 30-year lifespan. And as you’ll be contributing to world-class education, you enjoy interacting with, coaching and mentoring students, while developing your own skills.
You also have:
- A PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or another relevant subject.
- Well-developed analytical and programming skills.
- A good command of spoken and written English, as you’ll be working in an internationally diverse community and with international partners. And as you’ll be working with Dutch-speaking partners and students too, you also speak Dutch, or are willing to learn the language.
Conditions of employment
This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position (0.8 – 1.0 FTE). During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track. You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation.
