Qualification Details

Competences of the ideal applicant:

  • Hold a PhD degree in either theoretical and computational chemistry, synthetic chemistry or a related field
  • Solid publication record
  • Experience with python programming
  • Experience with retrosynthetic software is considered a major plus
  • Experience with organic synthesis is considered a major plus
  • Complex problem-solving skills and critical thinking
  • Ability to work interdisciplinary
  • Highly motivated
  • Ability to conduct work in a structured and systematic manner and with a sufficient degree of independency

Responsibilities/Job Description

Generating novel molecules by means of computer algorithms are increasingly more common. Those molecules are, however, rarely, if ever, synthesized in a lab due to a plethora of reasons like not being synthesizable in the first place or just being incredibly difficult to synthesize. In order to make progress in this area, and have algorithms suggest novel molecules that can actually be synthesized, our hypothesis is that synthesizability should play a vital role during algorithmic discovery. The project is expected to include equal parts of theoretical work and experimental work.

Central to a successful project is the interface of our graph-based genetic algorithm with retrosynthetic software to work with only specific types of reactions or specific building blocks. Through this work, it is paramount to understand what requirements are needed to only include reactions that are possible in such a way, that generating novel molecules have a reasonable chance of being successfully synthesized in the lab afterwards. The ideal candidate will ideally combine algorithmic discovery of novel molecules with desirable properties and organic chemical synthesis. Part of the work includes supervision of students.

About the Department/Section/Group

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience provides cutting-edge research and teaching in biotechnology, biology, environmental science, chemistry and chemical engineering. Our research solves important topics for the benefit of society, and through research-based teaching, we educate independent, collaborative and solution-oriented bachelors, graduates and PhDs.

The Section of Chemical Science and Engineering consists of 80 people of which about 20 is associate- and full professors. The section conducts internationally competitive research within a range of topics within Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and publishes more than 80 peer reviewed publications annually. The section is responsible for the educations in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and is located in both campus Aalborg and campus Esbjerg. The workplace for this position is Aalborg.
